So last night i took apart passenger door and only broke 1 clip... yay... I took the door apart to remove and replace the side view mirror assy. It went pretty well. No real problems getting the mirror out although the hole to pull the end of the harness out of the door was extremely small. So since the harness was not the issue the smashed mirror was, i cut the harness and spliced in the new mirror to the old harness (did it properly with connectors and solder). Taped it up and gently pulled it back down into the door. I found out the hard way that i have to route the harness exactly the way it came out so it does not interfere with the window going up and down. So just when i thought i was finishing up i had to go back and re route the harness. So to the interesting stuff. The old mirror was hit and smashed pretty good from previous owner. I noticed as i was finishing up the rear cig lighter popped out and was red hot. This was not working before this job. Also the rear window buttons to raise and lower windows were lit red. These have been dark for a year. I now get a noticeable drain on electrical system when i press the rear buttons to lower windows but still no movement. perhaps a short and ceased rear reg. motors. (on both) hmmm. Im thinking the short was either in the old smashed mirror or in the harness inside the door and as i was messing around with the new mirror i moved it and it un-shorted. Another issue is the rectangular button on the driver panel that says "on and off" is always lit red Why is this? Shouldnt it go off???
Is my driver door "on and off" button shorted out stopping the rear windows from going down? The chattering relay has not returned and im going to put the mats back in tomorrow.
How hard is it to completely remove door from car so i can really get a look at these harnesses? It looks pretty easy? Do they re-seat ok without leaking?
So, if i went to the dealer and told them i needed a new side view mirror installed in my 1990 audi V8 i wonder what they would charge me. I would think around 500.00 with the parts and labor included. I did it for $ 39.00 and about 2 hours. Thanks for all the help. this list is extremely helpful and im learning so much.
