>> The black plastic parts are long gone and the flat brass tops are
showing. They appear to be serrated on the edges, so I tried some needle
nose pliers but couldn't get a good grip. So what's the secret?
---- Try some channel locks so you can adjust to get a square mating between
the plier surface and the brass ser rations.
>> I also replaced the air cleaner. I'm still a bit puzzled as I had to
remove the strut support to get it back on. Really?!
---- Not usually necessary... You have to hold the filter (pleats up, into
the plastic cover) up into the cover as you feed it under the support. It
takes some finesse to get the rubber gasket on the filter to seat properly
so you can screw it back together.
>>> Regarding my INOP blower motor, I was able to peer inside to the
squirrel cage and noticed that it wasn't turning. It would spin freely when
pushed with a long screw driver but would never move on it's own. Totally
shot?
---- Not necessarily. Have you tried some WD40? That will clean and
lubricate the contacts and can extend the life of the blower.
>>>> Not done much to track down and fix any leaks.
--- For engine oil leaks, typically most agree that a synthetic can
exacerbate leaking. Try some snake oil. It is designed to swell
(reinvigorate?) gaskets. "Power steering fluid" aka Pentosin hydraulic fluid
can also drip onto the manifolds and smoke. Again, Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, in
my experience, has reduced and eliminated some leaking in the hydraulic,
power steering/brake assist system.
