OBD II didn't start until model year 1995, so you'll likely dealing with an OBD I car. Those require a 2x2 adapter to connect with the newer OBD II units. Not sure on the software end, although there will be some capability. Below is my request for similar information from Bruce Ruhf at Ross-Tech. Really good guys and probably the most knowledgeable about the diagnostic tools that work with our cars.
Hi Kevin,
Our current product is still PC based - the mobile product that will work with iPads and other operating systems has not been released. We hope the new product will be released by third quarter of 2013.
If you need a tool now, you have two options: VCDS-Lite and a KKL wire you source on the internet, or full VCDS License with KII-USB Interface. In either case, you will need to source a 2x2 adapter - like the one we sell.
Because you are working on older vehicles which have very limited diagnostic capabilities, I am questioning the value of buying the full VCDS. You may want to look at the VCDS-Lite possibility but know that it has no support from Ross-Tech and if you feel you need that support, then you should consider the full VCDS.
If we can be of further service, please contact us at your convenience.
Kind Regards,
Bruce
