[V8] Pump recommendations

My favorite Audi parts guy is Rick at import parts specialists in Boise. He is scary knowledgeable about all german auto parts, and claims to know Febi Bilstein (and I am sure he does), and he says about Febi (and I quote) "Febi manufactures Boxes". In other words all they do is repackage from whatever source they can find and call it good. I think pretty much all of the aftermarkets do this. That means that you can get anything from real OEM to the cheapest chinese junk all in the same box.

Especially for V8 parts, if anyone is having problems finding stuff I would try Rick. He is truly amazing at what he can find.

Gates will repackage many OEM parts, sometimes China offshore. This is especially true of low volume sale parts, like the V8. (My wife used to work at their HQ).
I also like Valeo, also used Graf and of course OEM.
It is a buyer beware these days.  My son-in-law runs a shop doing $6 mil in business/yr and said that parts are all over the board right now.  So buyer beware.  I know warranties do nothing to cover your labor down the road, but work for toilet paper.

Been a lurker in this email list for a bit ...replying here and there
mainly to "For sale" emails. However, I'm happy to say I'm now an owner! I
wanted to reach out to the members of this mailing list, as I've learned
through the years that this is also a very valuable source of help input
and support.

Picked up a 91 V8 5speed last week and will be bringing it back up to good
shape. Won't bore you with the details but I did want to run a question by
you all. Inevitably I will have to do a timing belt service and I'm
wondering about Water pump brands. I wanted your input as far as quality.
I've been able to separate them in four "tiers"...the last one including
the brands I've never heard of and could not find input on the forums.

So far I have group them as such:

OEM VW/Audi> Bosch & Meyle > Graf & Gates> then the rest...Valeo,FAI,
FEBI,FLENNOR,HEPU,DURA INTERNATIONA,CARDONE
