[V8] timing belt

I pulled the the cover on mine yesterday and found it to be clean and very little wear. No leaks of anti-freeze or oil. The belt was done at the Audi dealer and I could just make out the OOOO on the belt. I think I will take the same approach and check it once or twice this summer and fall. Since I don't drive it in the winter I can do it then or just keep checking it and change it at it's mileage life.

I have my brake accumulator out to be re-charged to see if that improves the braking. They have always felt spongy. I have replaced pads, all 4 flexible hoses and had them power bled twice and the feel is always the same. I get the red brake light on the first stab of the pedal, if I release and press again I get much better brake response.

I found the timing belt thread to be very timely. I've had my V8 back
on the road since Christmas and have enjoyed it again, albeit not full
time.

Very shortly I will have a new windshield installed then proceed to the
mandatory state inspection. Prior to Christmas, the car had been off
the road for two and one half years simply because it wasn't needed to
be driven. But with the fuel pump failure in the 100, it was necessary
to drive the dear old thing again while the fuel pump repair was made.
The car ran fairly well but for a minor skip which is largely gone and
which I suspect is plugs. I have chosen not to do anything about it as
yet as it isn't severe and is mostly intermittant anyway.

I rechecked my records. When I first bought the car in 2008 it had
66,000 miles on it and immediately it went to the wrench. Needed RIGHT
THEN was the timing belt which was original to the car and a hand full
of other small-is items.. At tha time it also received new plug, wires,
distributor caps. fie; filters and the like. Now it is eight years
later and the car has travelled perhaps thirty thousand miles.

So when the car goes to the wrench for its inspection, I'll have the
covers pulled off the timing belt and we'll look at it. I suspect the
timing belt will be fine to continue with, but from now on I'll likely
have the wrench look at it every six or seven thousand miles. I really,
REALLY do not want to do the timing belt at this point, although
technically by age it should be done, or at least checked carefully. I
am hopeful that it won't be necessary prior to its normal mileage limit
which will occur for this car perhaps in 2019.

2019 is a sort of magic year for me. I might be interested in doing
something else around that time. Some other sort of vehicle that is.
That might be a good time for us to really pull the plug and go back to
one car in the household. I expect the 100 Avant to have at least
225,000 by that time, and the V8 will probably have around 120,000 and
absolutely due for a full timing belt service. The 100 Avant will need
a timing belt at around 235,000 miles and depending on how much it leaks
before then will determine exactly what we will be doing. At 75 years
of age I am really not keen to buy another car at all as I like what
I've got and what I've got works very well for us.

And I do not want a Tesla.

or a Prius.

EVER.
