This brings back memories. I had a radiator fan relay fail and A/C system =
pressure and heat increased to the point where it melted and popped the plu=
g out of the receiver/drier bottom and lost all refrigerant. The replaceme=
nt receiver driers do not have the vent plug (EPA regs, I guess).
On A/C models, a two-speed fan is used. The radiator fan runs on low all t=
he time when the A/C is "ON", regardless of whether or not the compressor i=
s engaged, unless it is running on high speed. There is a pressure switch =
installed in the "High Side" A/C pressure line that turns the fan on "High"=
at a predetermined refrigerant pressure. The high fan speed is actuated v=
ia a relay, the low speed is not. A two-fan-speed radiator thermal switch =
is used too. Bentley diagrams it well. I had to rewire my fan circuit (fus=
ed it off a power wire off the battery), since the faulty relay caused the =
fuse to overheat and totally melt and burn the fuse box. The fuse was loca=
ted on the end most slot. Rather than replace the entire fuse box, I elect=
ed to rewire the circuit and put the fuse under the hodod.

I transferred a good 1.5 NA out of my totaled 79 Rabbit into a 84 Jetta with
a bad motor last year. This year I'm trying to get the air conditioning
working but I'm having some problems. I had the system checked and charged
with R134 and it worked fine for about 3 weeks then one day the high pressu=
re
relief on the drier popped and I lost all the refrigerant. In trying to
diagnose what happened I remember there were some "mystery" wires on the
Jetta that I didn't have on the Rabbit. The way it's wired now the radiator
fan doesn't activate when the ac is turned on. I'm looking at the wiring
diagram in Bentley but I'm confused. Should the fan stay on anytime the ac =
is
engaged?
Thanks for any help
