My 85 Jetta TD manual is 3,252 pounds with a full tank, driver, 4
passengers and their luggage.
You will be running a car WITHOUT driver and passengers, so you can
subtract 145# times 5 = 725#. 3252-725 = 2,527# and you then can take
off whatever weight of fuel you don't have in the tank, and whatever weight
of luggage your passengers aren't packing.
In my opinion, you can easily adjust the weight of the car to about 2,300 #
by using the above information. You say your upper limit on the trailer is
2,950#, which gives a safety margin of 650#, approx. That is a
considerable margin for error.
Your car's weight is based on the gross vehicle loaded weight number
stamped on a plate on the driver door pillar. Look on the specific car you
are talking about, and go from there, subtracting whatever isn't present.
