[Vwdiesel] Sparks out the exhaust?

I've never seen this before.  I was over a friends house and we took
his Dasher out.  While driving it I heard a rattling noise coming
from under the car, then we saw sparks coming from the rear.  We stop
and look for something dragging the ground and all is clear.

The sparks were coming out the exhaust.  We were wondering if this is
typical of a muffler failure, he's going to bang on the muffler today
to see if it's rattling on the inside.

He just had his head rebuilt as the PO blew the head gasket and the
head warped.  It may be some garbage from the previous gasket
failure.
