[Vwdiesel] Black smoke - low power

When I rechecked the timing this afternoon, I found it at .95, I backed
it down .82mm.  Is that advancing or retarding the pump?  Bentley says
Vanagon spec is .78-.88 with optimum setting @ .86 +/- .02

The biggest "huh" I see is the width of the timing notch. Should I pin
the pulley prior to making the adjustment?

Last question...  Just how gutless should I expect this thing to be?
four mile run with a brick on the throttle netted 53 mph. Level ground.
