You will hear the arguments about how the SUV fills a need, marketing is
merely addressing that need and not driving it...which reminds me of the
arguments about how TV contributes to social decay, violence etc.

 When I worked in broadcasting years ago and these arguments still had some
freshness, the guys in management would be denying it, claiming there has
always been violence in entertainment, huckstering, etc.  Meanwhile the guys
in advertising would be saying..."give me a budget and we will change
peoples' minds".

Marketing does work, sorry to say.  A sad fact for anyone trying to raise
kids these days.
