  You can but when you pull the T-cover, you get uncontrolled coolant
flow.  When you pull the stat, you get another batch of it.  :P  What I did,
rather than pull that straight hose all the time, is I brazed a 3/8 (I think)
pipe
coupling (half of it) to the heater pipe that hose connects to.  I then
threaded a radiator type drain valve into it an tada!  I now have a simple
coolant drain, which I've used twice since installing it in the Rabbit.  :)
