  Yup, the regulator should be part of the "brush holder."  Bad diodes will
also
stop an alternator from turning.  Unless your belt was loose, I'd get it
checked
out before just doing a new regulator.  Of course if the diodes are most all
bad
then just turning on the key is enough to make quite the electromagnet out of
it!  (wonder how I know that.....)  ;-)
