[Vwdiesel] Tranny DOA

I was driving my 85 Jetta TD when the engine came out of gear.  Now you can
shift into any gear without any response(shift linkages are intact and
working).  Time for a new tranny?  Any estimates for an exchange or rebuilt
tranny?   What would the labor cost vrs how many hours it would take me to
do the in and out?  The car has a new engine with 20K on it(clutch was
replaced at rebuild), but the tranny has close to 250K on it.
