I had the joy of test driving a 2002 Jetta TDI this weekend. What a blast!
It was so quiet, clean (i.e. no noticeable smoke or smell) and powerful.
What a difference between this and my old diesel. I have driven many
gasoline engine cars that didn't perform as well. The handling was tight and
responsive. The power was incredible. Overall it just knocked my socks off.
Now I am trying to figure out a way to purchase one. The dealership has a
wagon that was allocated and is en-route currently that sounds fantastic
(Indigo Blue, 5 spd, Gray Velour, sunroof, alloys, heated seats, heated
washer nozzles, power windows/mirrors/door locks, Monsoon sound). My wife
hasn't been too thrilled with my desire. I have been using very persuasive
arguments like, "It will save money in the long run because of the fuel
economy" and "I had to work to pay for college, it will do the kids good to
do the same", etc., but she just isn't buying it.
If I win the battle I'll let you all know. Right now though it doesn't look
too good.
Wistfully,
Duncan
