[Vwdiesel] Timing w/o tools? and HELP!!

Tom,
If you're near Milwaukee, WI, I'd be happy to help you time it. You can
get it mounted and timing belt close without special tools, but there's no
way to set the injector timing that I can figure out without the dial
indicator and adaptor. I eyeballed one, and drove for a while, then got the
tools - wow what a difference in power to have it timed correctly.
I second Lauren's mention of checking the rear injector mounting bolt.
There are three bolts holding the pump to the mounting plate in front, and
one bolt on the lower back of the pump. If missing, this would give you the
flex to break your lines, and cause the timing issues. The other
possibility is the pump mounting bracket bolts (from the mounting bracket to
the block) - those rattled loose on my vanagon already.
Your mechanic may only be checking the pump timing - maybe your cam to
TDC timing is off slightly?? Some mechanics don't necessarily check that
part of it when timing the injection pump. Find the TDC mark on the
flywheel (the dot, not the notches). The groove on the back side of the cam
should be parallel with the head. At this point, a long (I think 7/16)
socket should fit in the injector pump sprocket timing hole. This would
give you an idea if your timing belt is on correctly.
The only other thing I can think of would be compression leaking past
the rings and blowing some oil into the intake - at it's worst, this can
cause "runaway diesel engine" as it just continues burning the oil blowby
and continues accelerating. But a mild case of this might cause it to run
erratically. I doubt this is the case, but it's something to consider in an
older VW diesel. There are oil baffles available that are supposed to stop
this problem.
Hope you can find the problem.... let me know if you do...
Chris Geiser
