I may be the lone voice saying this:

I've used virtually nothing but Fram on both my 1985 Jetta TD , and all
of my air-cooled VW's for many years (occasionally a [gasp] ACDelco, or
Purolator). Again, no oil related failures, and engines that have
typically lasted into the upper 150k for gas and currently 225k for my
TD.

I think the key is to change the oil regularly, more frequently for stop
and go driving, even more frequently in the winter when H2O and
aromatics don't always get hot enough to cook out of the oil.

Thanks for the amazing amount of responses about my
oil and filter question.

I had my doubts about the Fram filter, but the store I
was in had very limited choices and I was in a hurry.

I'll return the Fram and hunt down something German.

I'm going to stick with the Chevron Delo 400 since I
can get it in bulk from Costco.
