I read this report and this was the SOLE BASIS for me using Fram oil filter=
 in my DIESEL VW!!  I valued CR's testing and opinion.  My mistake!  Were a=
re dealing w/ diesel engines here, not gasoline ones.  The tests applied to=
 gas vehicles. I applied the same reasoning to Fram air filters, and used t=
hem too, not knowing they were thinner than OEM.

After switching to MANNs, I continued to use Fram O/Fs on my Nissan Maxima =
(Wife's ride).  I got a Nissan once, and was appalled at the difference in =
the thickness of the bottom mounting plate that has the threads that screw =
onto the engine.  Fram has 1 and a half threads and Nissan had about 8.  To=
ld me if a stick or somthing got kicked up and hit the filter, the Fram wou=
ld be ripped off of the engine.  For about $1 more, I began getting Nissan =
ones.  They were even cheaper than Olympic's Japanese OEMs, and about $5.

You are not alone. I have been using Fram's since 1976 in my golf and
then jetta. The jetta is at 200k miles and doing fine. I have more
issues with oil than I do the filter.

Fram had some well publicized problems with one batch of filters many
years back which could not hold the pressure, but no problems since. But
that incident seems to have formed the database.

Also Consumer Reports listed them the best filter.
