Ed Lowe's 14 month Vanagon engine upgrade project reached an important
milestone Sunday when the new AAZ 1.9turbo diesel engine was started for the
first time.  Onlookers cheered as it started immediately and showed no smoke
or excessive noise.  It was run for 10 minutes with no defects noted.

Ed Lowe, the owner, said "I followed a procedure I learned from the "Diesel
List", I cranked for 30 seconds with fuel and glow plugs off followed by one
minute's rest two times to prime the oil pump, then pressurized the fuel
tank with a vacuum cleaner and began the start cycle.  It started
immediately".  He added " I would not have been able to do this with out the
help and support of the Diesel List members.  They are a tremendous
knowledge base".

Only a little work remains to make the vehicle roadable.  "The throttle
needs to have an extension made and the engine cover needs a bump to clear
the taller engine parts, then it is off to the Emissions station for new
tabs.  Won't they be surprised to see how little it smokes for a Diesel with
160,000 miles!"
