In June 1990 I bought (actually my mother bought it for me) the 1985 Jetta TD I drive. Paid $4,650 for it. Had 56,000 miles on it at the time.

Indeed it is. All of those references fail to give the
true value of the car. A 1992 VW Jetta ECOdiesel in
good condition is worth about $3,500-4,000. I bought
mine for $3,700 a year ago, and have since retrofitted
it with an automatic transmission. It runs like a
dream. I wouldn't sell it for a penny less than
$6,000.
