[Vwdiesel] Eco hard starting problem

  It wouldn't hurt to do a compression test.  The cheapest I've seen
gauges is on ebay.  Search for "guage."  They usually show up
under "diesel" too.  Yes, they misspell gauge.  Slow starting could
be a bad glow plug or two, injectors, possibly compression, or an
air leak.  The injectors are certainly old enough that you'd probably
notice the difference with new ones, if they're still originals.  To check
for an air leak is, if it's not a TD type pump, to pull the return line
banjo bolt and see if the pump is full or nearly full of diesel.  If it's
down, you have an air leak.  Also, look for bubbles in the clear line
at startup.  If the pump's draining down then air will usually go into
the clear supply line.  If the air's coming in the supply side then you'll
see steady supply of bubbles.  If it's coming in the return side then
it just siphons down after you shut the engine off.  Don't overlook the
glowplugs.
