There is a scissor like mechanism in the door.  It is most likely bent.
My wife's did the same thing for a while until the window fell out of
the track.  Get in there and make sure the window is behaving in the
track and not binding up.  If it is...make adjustments to stop it.  I
had to replace the scissor mechanism...got one from a 93 passat that fit.
