[Vwdiesel] VW rebuilds in France? Other vanagon diesel questions

I recently bought a used, low miles, factory rebuilt diesel vanagon engine.
I noticed a metal label on the engine saying it was rebuilt by VW in France.
I was expecting it to be German. Does VW have several facilites where they
rebuild their motors?
Also, this engine has 20k on it. What might I want to do in terms of
regular maintainance to get as many miles as I can out of this motor? Is
there any particular brand or kind of oil that is known to prolong engine
life? Any other tips (other than common sense speed expectations and
regular oil changes?)
I am having a mechanic put the new(er) engine in the van. I'll keep the old
motor and at some point go through it, learn and rebuild. I'm new to this.
I have the Bentley, which I don't find to be terribly user friendly (no
index, for example). Is there a website or anything I could use for help?
Can the engine be taken out and put back in by one guy working alone?
What's the most difficult part?
Thanks in advance
