In general, automotive extended warranties are a VERY POOR value. Sales
people make a whopping commission on these warranties, and push them HARD for
a sale!!!. They have a high incentive to sell these. You can also purchase
them from a private company (usually for a lot less) at a later date. You can
also get a refund on the one you got through VW (actually its not through VW,
but an insurance company they push), so check out your paperwork very well!
Get a refund (just my opinion). If the dealers lost money, on average, they
would not be offered. Check out the Consumer's Reports automotive issue, or
any of the many auto buying guides at the library for a detailed explanation.
But occassionally you do get lucky w/ one of these warranties, like my friend
who bought one when he got a new Dodge Caravan and his transmission went out
TWICE (first time at 40K miles, right after the 36 K mile warranty expired,
then the rebuild failed 20 K miles later and they put a brand new one in that
had been engineered the correct way) and was covered by the extended warranty
both times

With the 2002 Golf TDI, I could almost guarantee you will not use up $1,500
worth of covered "insurance" repairs. Nothing major like an engine, A/C, or
tranny should go out. Little things may happen, like what happened to my Mom
with her 2000 Jetta TDI, the MIL light came in at 17,000 miles and its not
covered. (I thought it was because of the 100,000 mile mandated US EPA
emissions warranty, BUT...Warranty booklet states the diagnosis and repair
for emissions systems malfunction (MIL light on) is ONLY covered if the
vehicle fails an emission inspection. In Virginia (where Mom lives), diesel
cars are exempt from emissions resting!, so its not covered.) The dealer
wants $150 to reset the light and diagnose the problem. Its most likely an
under $300 problem, that won't harm the car to continue running it w/ the
light on. For about $300, you can buy the software for laptop use to do it
yourself.
