  Yes, you should be able to shift it into the gears with the engine off, if
it's
the clutch (out of adjustment, frozen or grenaded).  Speedometer quitting
should be a different issue but it's enough to make me think you ought to
check your tranny oil for "sparklies."  It's possible but unlikely something
in the tranny has gone to pieces.  Have one person shift through the gears
as another watches the linkage under the hood to be sure it's not just a
linkage issue, which is the most likely thing other than clutch.
