There's one little step you missed. Between wiping it down best as
possible and flushing it. Wipe and scrub it down with a sponge and
soap with water. By the time you flush it, there's not much to wash
down other than a little soap. Also by flushing it, any metal and grit
that may be left isn't drizzling in so as to increase the chance of it
getting into the bearings. Besides, you wash until a paper towel or
rag comes out clean when you wipe down the cylinder walls. Not
much really runs down by this time. :)

I learned this from a diesel text book. It covers all the way from basic
theory to rebuilding and hurking big industrials. For an older book it's
not all that old of information. Of course the basic engine really hasn't
changed.
