Chris,
I have used a VDO gauge on all my VW and they can be bought in Farenheight
or Celcius from any VDO dealer (I think the Farenheight was $30-00 and
the Celcius was $40 in 1994). The stock sender does NOT work with these
gauges but a replacement fits right in ($12-00 in 1994) where the old one
comes out. I mounted 4 gauges (water temp, oil temp, volt meter and oil
pressure) on a VDO supplied bracked over the dashboard ashtray and bent up
some sheet metal as a cover.
I had to buy water temp gauges for the Diesel in 1994 as it was the first
VW van that was not air cooled.
