[Vwdiesel] tales from the driveway

The fun has begun... the head is off. Managed to put a quarter twist in
a Craftsman 10mm Allen socket, shortly before it blew apart. Picked up
an Apex, it succeeded in twisting off the head bolt. The fire wrench
made short work of the stub, although the timing advance cable smoked a
bit. The head bolt was rusted in real good.

So my '82 has mid-'81 head bolts! Actually I like that, might just
re-use them and retorque a time or two. Gonna have to replace the two
rusty ones. The head gasket ducts the coolant along two of the head
bolts, it's no wonder they rust! What were they thinking?

There's a very well-defined ridge, so I'm going to use a ridge reamer
after all. Got the 'lathe' variety which is supposed to do a better job
than the 'standard' model. I guess if I'm have to ream the ridge, I'll
just go ahead and follow Dr. Loren's honing prescription, too. It's
pretty clear that the engine really needs a bore and bigger pistons --
in one cylnder I can see down to the ring if I look just right. Don't
think that gap is a mere thousandth of an inch!

Thanks for everyone's ideas, they're a great help!
