Went to the muffler shop today and had the stock exhaust system replaced.
Measured the inside diameter of the stock inlet to the muffler 11/2"! We
took off all of the pipe from the cat back and took out that hideous
resonator and muffler. He then fitted 2 1/2" pipe to the back with a Thrush
turbo muffler in the position of the rear muffler. Fabricated a 2 1/2"
downturned tail pipe and viola! Started the car and there is absolutely no
difference in the noise level! The may be a little more resonance at idle
but nothing that is bothersome. EGT seems to rise more slowly and is
running at least 50-75 degrees F below where it did before at normal highway
speeds. Let my engine breathe! I can feel the difference in the seat of
the pants as the turbo now spools up much faster. It has also stopped
making the whining sound that it use to make on spool up. Now, those of you
with TDIs using cone filters, do you use the one for the 2.0 and just make a
vacum outlet for the vacum hose connected to the air box? Let me know,
because that is the next step - more cool air in, cooler exhaust out.
