[Vwdiesel] TDI CV joint

I pulled the lower belly pan on the wife's Passat last night to change
oil, and found the right inner CV boot shredded and all the grease gone.
How hard of a job is changing this?  I'm inclined to just pull and replace
the boot, but if it's gonna die soon anyways, I'll throw in a new shaft.
I've never had the front end apart on a VW, is it a pain?  Special tools?
The shaft wouldn't move so I don't think it's been running sans grease long.
