this behavior is not limited to tool steels. it applies to all metals. the
alloying agents tailor the cold behavior. generally stainless variants are
better performers at cold temps. certain aluminum alloys too.

other notable brittle fracture failures at cold temps include the liberty
ships of ww2 whose welds unzipped while in the north sea. lots of work was
also done when designing the alyska pipeline.
