Your Jetta should be as fast as that old Escort if it was automatic. It will
not be as fast as a 5 speed gas car. It should be better on hills then an
equivalent gasser because of the turbo. It has 68 hp and just under 100
lb/ft of torque (2400rpm?). (straight diesel was 52 hp and 70 torque or so
and 16 seconds to 100km/h). Vw rated them at 12 sec 0-100 km/hr. It should
go 800-900 kms on a tank highway without "venting" to top off the fuel tank,
with venting (depressing valve just inside the filler neck on the cars rear
side) 1000-1100 kms are no problem highway driving.
Using synthetic oil and fuel conditioners will help alittle, so will
servicing the fuel injectors (see a Bosch rebuilder-$25 to clean, $60 to
rebuild). Probably due with 370k on them...
Some turbo cars do not develop enough boost from broken or seized waste
gates or the boost enrichment is not working (fuel screw is turned doen on
the injection pump). Don't play with the pump yourself, a little does alot!
Test your acceleration time to 100km/h, shift at 4000 rpm or whenever it
dies off. If it is not near 12-13 seconds, check the boost as mentioned, if
it has boost look at the pump and injectors, no boost look at the
turbo/waste gate.
If your car doesn't smoke at all under load it probably isn't getting enough
fuel...
