More likely the seal failure is related to LACK OF USE!
Many opf the thimgs on these cars fail from siting unused for a while.

I have had several brake pads shed their friction block because I left it
parked for a month nd drove another one. Moisture gets between the friction
pad and the backing plate , rust starts, and pries the pad right off, then
the pedal goes to the floor, and you find the friction pad lying in the
driveway.

As for the pump seal, I think it can dry out if there is no fuel in the
pump, and when you crank it, it just takes 500,000 miles worth of the rubber
off the inside of the seal.

Happened to me on the engine I am driving, which had sat dry under a tree
for a year. I had turned it over a few times by the starter to judge the
compression before I bought it, Got it running whenI got it home using the
"IV drip", but when I put it in the car and tried to start it, it would not
suck fuel from the tank. Did the gravity feed drip again, and fuel poured
out around the shaft.

Since I replaced the seal, 60,000 miles ago, no problems.
