Is that how diesels run? I mean, the driver controls
RPM? I was always not sure on that issue--not to
cloud the issue with apples and oranges, but on gas
motors the throttle controls power output, and the
loading would dictate engine RPM. But, on a diesel,
if the throttle pedal (to whatever that controls)
regulates engine speed, then theoretically I could
homebrew a crude cruise control by locking the
throttle to a fixed position, right?
Or, to look at it another way, if I am driving along,
giving it around 1/4 throttle (for lack of a better
term) and I press down on the pedal while in high
gear, it won't matter if I floor it or go 1/2 way, the
engine will put out full power?
Note: The usaul disclaimer: I am not advocating cruise
control this way, nor do I plan to try this out! It
is for illustration only!

Well... mine can. Come drive it some day. It's all
in the fueling
setup.
Diesels are not like gas cars. When you ask for power
by depressing
the
pedal, you are telling the governor inside the fuel
pump that the
engine
speed is too low. The pump responds by increasing the
fuel injected
quantity to bring the rpm's to what your foot is
asking for.
