My understanding is that you can now buy stronger head bolts from GM,
which do not break, but I still wonder why the head bolts break anyway,
as they shouldn't even if weak (unless the block is flexing a lot or
something). Most engines that I know of don't have roller camshafts, or
bypass filters from the factory, but those can both be added if you
want. I agree with you that the 5.7 diesel is awful, but there are some
people out there that like them still, and keep them going with very
little problems. Apparently there are possible long term solutions to
most of the problems, but many of them require doing a lot of work.

likes these motors, but has not yet been commited, or won any court
cases on grounds of insanity:

I think if someone gave me one for free, I would at least drive it until
