I may have been fuzzy about the vicegrips, not for the circlip, but for
ajusting the 2 flange bolts against the bar.
The circlip I fiddled in with 2 screwdrivers once the flange is pressed in
against the spring, past the groove, using the "press"
I believe the big spring is there on all the trannies, to force the flange
against the circlip and prevent wobble. Otherwise it would tend to wear out
the splines as someone already complained about.
I also think the spring preloads the tapered roller bearing inside the diff.
Leaving that spring out is inviting premature diff. bearing failure!
The spring behind the flange (including the big washer) and the circlip, are
all parts of the grand scheme of holding the diff. together.
Any one else want to see a picture of my flange press?? idiot simple.
Sandy
