I can speak with authority on the matter of NA vs. ECOdiesels in
model year 1991...
In June 1991, I purchased a NA 1.6 diesel Jetta, which was manufactured in
Feburary 1991, in Germany. One reason I purchased this car was that it
was NA, and the next model year, due to be released in about three months,
were to be ECOdiesels. Much ado about that.
Worried about the longterm maintenance concerns of owning a turbo diesel,
and definitely into owning the car for the long term, I decided to get the
91 NA Jetta. [As an aside, my wife assured me that the car offered growing
room, as it had a fifth seat (the Rabbits we drove did not), and if we
had another child, we'd all still fit. My comment was that with my luck,
we'd have twins. A year later we did.]
I still own the 91 NA Jetta.
BTW, my recollection was that while all 92 diesel Jettas sold in US were
ECOdiesels, there were a few ECOdiesels that leaked out late in the 91
model year. Not 100% certain on that.
Happy Easter.
