That is exactly what happened to my '85 TD, but oil
consumption and blowby were very pronounced (1 qt in
600 miles). Top ring on #4 was broken. 280 PSI on that
cylinder, engine would miss on idle(from low
compression) on that cylinder. Speed and power seemed
fine, though. Unless more than one ring is broken, I
doubt that is the problem. There again, a compression
test will tell you what's up.
A note on re-ringing: Plan on a complete engine
overhaul (a block bore and oversize pistons). I just
got 45,000 miles on my ring job and after that, the
motor was using a quart of oil in 250 miles! Mosquito
fogger! Should have been bored in the first place.
