We are getting close to the real meat. --- patience pays. How did I get prodded to learn about these pumps ? a quote for a new pump from dealer had something to do with it. "5000 dollars Canadian" .Exactly how much can we really do (DIY) before having to send the pump to a shop ??? a lot .----- Cleanliness is godliness in this game ---so if you have to borrow wife's electric toothbrush --so be it. Use every trick in the book to clean around pump. I have a fully disassembled pump in front of me.So I know what is inside. Pump? --Bosch 068 130 107 A . So ? where is the MEAT ? we find it in dynamic timing. A lot of old volks smokes going up the hill because dynamic timing is not working .The pump is designed to start advancing injection at about 2000 RPM. The vanepump pressure increases with RPM (when new) and a piston pushing against a very strong coilspring in turn piston moves the roller assembly to change timing. Much like a gas job does with vacuum and flyweights.Vanepumps are notoriously finicky abut lubrication and pressure falls as vanes wear, so we wind up with more fuel but no advance resulting in lots of smoke, and lack of power.
Av oil increases the viscosity of fuel to a point were timing starts to work again. In wintertime use less AV oil --find the right mixture by testing.Use just enough to stop smoke. Number ¤ being worked on. Hagar.
