Here is why I like the leak-down tester   ( homemade )  .  Compression test=
er only shows pressure or lack thereof. Leak-down tester shows where the le=
ak is if pressure is LOW.  Stick a listening tube in intake or exhaust to h=
ear if valves are leaking. In sump if rings or holes in pistons or bore is =
in trouble.you get the drift. VW diesels 1980 to 1984 with solid lifters (t=
hem disks) are tricky , the valves slowly sink in to seat to a point where =
they do not close properly. I just had one like that on an OLD 1.5L NA.   R=
an fine when cold, but as soon as it got warm # 2 cylinder puffed smoke. It=
 has no exhaust manifold on. Is running in front of house on a piece of ply=
wood. .20 liter plastic bucket for cooling. Great place for fuel and inject=
ion pump experiments. . Amazing little noise at idle.                Hagar.
