Is exhaust temperature 
monitoring only needed for modified engines?


  Not exactly.  Modified fueling, absolutely!  It's a very handy tool on any 
TD.  You know how long you need to idle down before shutting off the 
engine, so you don't coke up the turbo. It'll also indicate a bad injector, 
or low fueling (or if you have the "room" to add more fuel for more power.)
