have to admit that I do not understand what good it is if you
only have one. Normally on a diesel each cylinder has one so all
the cylinders can be tuned to share the load.
Since we don't have "racks" to adjust it's a bit more pointless to use
one on each, not to mention 4X the cost and I think most of us are
pretty cheap! The VE pump only has one plunger and a distributor.
Sure you can mess with the injectors but it's a roundabout way to
adjust fueling for each cylinder. It's also rough on the pump from
what several diesel mechanics have told me, to have varying pressures
on the pump. In other words, we can't adjtst the fueling for each,
individual cylinder so...
With a single probe you can tell if one injector is bad. The temp will
be higher than normal. You can tell if the fuel is turned up too high
or there is room for more power. It'll train your foot if you watch it. You
can tell more on adjusting your TD enrichments as well.
One bad injector detected by one more than pays for itself. I have a
nearly holed TD piston that was caused by a bad injector. If the guy
would've read his pyrometer, he'd have seen the higher temp and avoided
engine teardown.
Not that a lot of the stuff can't be set without one but the maximum temp
is a bit tough to set without one. Maximum temp = maximum fuel =
maximum power. :)
