That's funny, I've installed the vanagon pan twice now, and never
stripped out the aluminum seal carriers. I've thought that the torque
value for the cast iron block seemed a little low. It wasn't an
incredible amount of torque- something like 7 or 12 ft-lbs. Seems
reasonable.

to someone off list. There's a lot of interesting reading there,
including a program you can download that helps determine torque values.
Maybe it was on this list that I heard of that page to begin with ?
