I'm beginning to think VWs are overpriced (when new). Last year I was strongly
considering buying a new Jetta TDI. Price was about $20K. I held off and put a
rebuilt motor and clutch kit in the '85 Jetta TD for about 5% of that! But I still
want a new(er) car. I even started paying attention to the rash of Hyundai ads that
have been running on TV. For about $10K you can get a Hyundai (an Elantra I think)
that has a 100K mile/10 yr. warranty. Just the savings in insurance costs alone
would more than make up in any fuel savings the TDI would offer. I have $10 K in
the bank, but not $20, so I'd have to finance a good part of the purchase price of
the TDI, another expense. Then I looked at a few pictures and the list of options
(what options!) of the Hyundai and I was not real impressed.
Also, talk about dealer incentives, VW does not offer these, period.
And last night I was watching Motor Week and they mentioned VW came out with the
convertible New Beetle. I thought I was hearing things when they mentioned the
sticker price--$45,000 to $50,000 US dollars. Wow! Is VW crazy? I'd buy a cherry
late model Mercedes TD for less than that first! That's another thought. I really
like the newer and smaller Mercedes Diesels/TDs. I think they were made in the mid
to late 1990s. What model is this and what should I expect to pay for a really nice
one?
