[Vwdiesel] Crappy fuel? (was Touareg)

Its interesting, but the big, over-the-highway tractor trailer rigs run draft
tubes, as do city buses, at least they did the last time I checked, to vent
crancase vapors to the atmosphere, so it must be bad to reroute them. EPA may
have changed this by now, though.
Cars and small engine (like lawnmower motors) crancases were vented to
atmosphere in the US up until 1961, or 1962 model year. California caused the
EPA to adopt the rerouting of crancase vapors after substantial research was
done in the late 1950s bacause of smog in the LA basin. I actually read some of
the SAE papers from that era. The test PCV valves looked just like the valves
used today! It was determined that burning the blow-by vapors would reduce
hydrocarbon emissions from cars by 25% and at a cost of a couple bucks per car.
I'm not sure if they ran engine durability tests, though.
