First is to start out by cleaning out the holes with a small screwdriver or
pick. Tap the tool into the fastener snugly and use a rachet driven rather
than an "L" wrench. An impact tool hand or air, is a good way to go as
well. Once buggered up, I use a chisel and a hammer and rather than
cutting a slot into it, drive it around enough to loosen it. They usually
will run right out after that.
They are indeed 6mm hex/allen and have to come off to get the timing
cover off to replace the belt. The big bolt in the center can stay though.
