Not sure about the VW versions, but I was reading about this the other day on
the crypto list, in reference to domestic cars, and it seemed that for Fords and
GM, at least, there were after market keys available, but with those, the car
itself programmed the new keys -- as long as you had a good key to put in first.
If you lose your only key, you are in deep financial doo-doo to get another one.
I didn't read it too closely, but I'm also fairly sure that they said you
could also change the programming on keys, which you would definitely want to do
with a used car, so that the PO still had a key, it wouldn't work. Seems odd
that they only had one key for yours. I personally always keep two keys to my
vehicle in separate pockets -- after twice locking myself out and having to once
break a window, and another time walk one heck of a long way home.
I don't know why they build cars so you can lock yourself out. I really like
the feature on my '82 vanagon -- you have to lock the drivers door with a key
after getting out. Of course, if you really tried, you could lock the drivers
door from the inside, then exit the passenger or side door, but ....
