pumps. 81 and later used different timing as did TD's. If you swapped pumps
then you need to time that pump to it's original specs rather than your car's.

If it was 485 then I'd say timing or injectors. If it's 385 then add low
compression as a likely cause as well.

Any of the above or worn rings, leaking valve stem seals or worn guides.
If it's a td and had the wrong oil or poor oil maintenance then you can add
the turbo to the list of possibilities.
