[Vwdiesel] alternators

Hi folks we have 4 (four) 1991 jetta diesels, and one of them is not charging it's battery right now even tho the light only works at startup. I have replaced the little brush thingy in the past, on the Motorola chargers, this one looks similar can I just un-screw the two screws, pop out the brush set, and try some new ones? Are they available as a separate part? Thanks and happy clattering, Dan.
