[Vwdiesel] alternators

That's usually the problem. The Bosch altenator brush assembly is
similar to the Motorola. I find my brushes at an altenator/starter
rebuild place($5). They cost more there (go figure) but I can never find
the size I want at Autozone or Advantage($3 for some).

Intermittent alt light operation, and having the light off prior to the
alt getting warm have been symptoms. Recently I bought a DC clamp on
current probe. I'm waiting for the next altenator to get marginal,
so I can check out the output. My guess is that the output falls
off prior to other symptoms.

Oddly enough, I've had a couple of Chrysler minivan altenators pass 200K
miles without the brushes failing. On my 91 Jetta Diesel, I'm on my 5th
set of brushes, at 200K.
