The only real way to know how long to go between oil changes is to have the
oil analyzed. www.avlube.com and www.oilguard.com are two good places for
oil analysis.
I use Amsoil 15w-40 in both of my diesels.

Amsoil recommends 6 months or "twice the normal drain interval" for a turbo
diesel. This would mean 6 months or 15k miles. VW recommends 6 months or
7500 miles. (at least they do for the 1.6 NA).
The main reason to use synthetic oil is longer drain intervals. I bet you
could go 10k miles on Amsoil 15w-40, have it analyzed, and it would show
everything is fine.
I go 10k miles per oil change in my TDI. But that's because VW says to go
10k. At 90k miles I'll have the oil analyzed. Then I'll see if I can go
longer. I know some people that can go 15k and 20k miles per oil change
because of the oil they use and their driving habits.
When I bought my 1.6NA she had 232,850 miles and had Amsoil 15w-40 in her.
I didn't think to ask when the oil was changed. I changed the oil at 235k.
I will again change it at 240k and have the oil analyzed. Then, pending the
results of the analysis, I won't change it again until 250k. And again I'll
have the oil analyzed. I'm betting I can go at least 10k miles between
changes. After all, VW recommends every 7500 miles, and that's using dino
oil. }:o)
